Black Bear drops from tree

Black Bear drops from tree

Black bear wanders onto the campus at CU-Boulder, climbs a tree. When they dart him, he falls from the tree. Caught in mid-flight by a photographer.

Eagle Peak Sunset

Eagle Peak Sunset

It's been monsoon season since we arrived, with rain every evening. Last night, it cleared out just before dusk and we went over to the fire pit to watch the sunset.

Rainbow in the Evening Sky

Rainbow in the Evening Sky

As monsoon season continues in the Front Range of Colorado, we are getting thunderstorms each evening. It's interesting that they call it monsoon season, when we get a total of 18" of rain a year, and most of that comes as snow in winter. A big thunderstorm will dump .3 inches around here. Here, you can see the double rainbow.

Storm's brewing on the ridge, a view from the porch

Storm's brewing on the ridge, a view from the porch

As thunderstorms were blowing in late afternoon, we noticed this unusual cloud formation, the moon above, with a partial rainbow in the distance. Love the view from the porch. We arrived in Colorado and are settling in. There's a lot of snow in the high country, the streams are full of snowmelt, pushing too hard for fishing yet.

Yosemite-Day Two

Yosemite-Day Two

Today we went out to Glacier Overlook, and got some great views of Yosemite Valley, and the Minarets, where we backpacked in 1974. After lunch back at the cabin, we took in Mariposa Grove late in the afternoon. We did the 1 1/4 hour open air tram, and everybody loved the journey and the audio tour. See the photos here.

Yosemite-Day One

Yosemite-Day One

Arrived in Fresno yesterday, six hours late, but undaunted. Our son, Andy, is running a three month construction job out here, and Alissa and our two granddaughters, Miya and Jasmine are here with him for the summer. We came out to take the kids to Yosemite. Genie and I have not been here since 1974, when we came out and backpacked in the Minarets Wilderness for a week, then came to Yosemite. We came home pregnant with our firstborn, Florrie, and didn't do much backpacking after that.

Here's a picture from Day One in the park. We rented a cabin in the Redwoods in Yosemite, a private inholding in the park, right on the side of the South Fork of the Merced River. Andy and I will get a little fly fishing in, but the snowmelt from the greatest snowfall on record is massive, and the river is overflowing its banks. This is really a scouting trip. I'm coming back out for a weekend of fishing in August, after the girls have to come back to Colorado for school. Tomorrow, we check out Mariposa Grove, the Giant Sequoias, and the Glacier Overlook.

River of No Return

River of No Return

We spent a week floating down the Middle Fork of the Salmon River through the River of No Return Wilderness in July.  The rapids were incredible, and the fishing was some of the best I've ever seen.  Notched another of the 50 places to Fly Fish before your die off my bucket list.  Genie and I went with Andy and Alissa, our son and daughter-in-law, and my cousins from San Francisco, Nick and Mary Graves.  Genie and Alissa road a raft, and Andy, Nick, Mary and I went in driftboats.  Read More.

Bighorn Sheep in St. Vrain Canyon

Bighorn Sheep in St. Vrain Canyon

As we drove down the canyon to Lyons from Ward, we came across daddy, mommy, and baby bighorn sheep standing in the middle of the road. They come down from the cliffs for mineral licks and to drink from St. Vrain Creek.
