My wife, Genie, has been an environmental educator volunteering at Zoo Atlanta for 15 years. She is a docent and animal handler. She also does tours for donors, and has led tours for a couple of visits from Make A Wish kids. In October, 2010, Genie went trekking for Gorillas with a group of Atlanta Zoo friends. It was an incredible trip with several close encounters high up on the mountains in Rwanda. Here is a video of the gorillas.
We have supported the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund since the headquarters moved to Zoo Atlanta years ago. Genie visited their Karisoke Research Center in Rwanda as they headed into the Virunga mountains trekking for Gorillas. Gorillas range to the very top of the volcanos, up to 10,000 feet. The trekking can be quite a challenge, as the trackers hack a path through the jungle with nettles everywhere.
